How a host handles a no-show

A dressed couple in a warm kitchen at night, two empty chairs at the table.

A no-show is silence after a yes. You run the night for the people who came. You do not hold a chair until midnight.

The short answer

Give them the arrival window you already named. When it passes, send one private note: we started, you are welcome to write if something happened, tonight is closed. Then stop waiting.

Your host invites friends. The host invites friends they'd love to have there. One private link per couple. A missing couple is not a reason to open the list to someone who was never invited.

Adult only. Private by design. You confirm you are 18 or older. The host still checks in the people who are actually at the door.

How many couples to invite

One note, not a search party

Text the couple, not the group. Ask if they are all right. Do not ask the room where they are, and do not read their silence out loud.

If they answer with a real delay, you can still say the door is closed for tonight. A late arrival is your call. It is not a vote.

If they never answer, the night is already underway. You do not owe them a second and third ping while guests are in the kitchen.

Do not fill the seat tonight

A stranger from a group text is not a replacement. You did not vet them, and the people who came did not agree to a new couple at the curb.

A maybe you already turned down stays turned down. An empty chair is smaller than a surprise guest.

A one-sided yes stays hidden. You also do not pull one person from a couple that is already there to "even the room." The list is the list.

What a maybe means on a party invite

The format does not wait on an empty chair

All mutual-yes matches are revealed, whether that happens together, at check-in, or after the short rounds. Start on time for the people in the room.

A key party shows one Play Partner at the same time. A play party reveals matches at check-in. A speed date is short rounds, then yes or no. An absent couple is skipped. You do not rebuild the rounds around a hope.

FAQ

How long do I wait?

Until the arrival time you already told them. After that, one note, then start. A lifestyle party is not a restaurant hold.

What if they text that they are twenty minutes away?

You can let them in or you can say tonight is closed. Say which, once. Do not leave the door half open while the room waits.

Do I tell the other guests they flaked?

No. Say the night is the people here. Their silence is not a story for the kitchen.

Can I invite someone else the same night?

No. A same-night fill-in did not get a real invite, and the room did not agree to them. Plan the next night if you want a different list.

Is a no-show the same as a cancel?

No. A cancel is a message before the door. A no-show is no message. You still do not punish them in the group text.

Do I invite them next time?

That is a later decision, made when you are not hosting. One missed night is not a verdict you announce tonight.
